Content range of main components

(1) Gutta-percha

Content: about 10-30% in dry bark (large differences among different varieties).

Characteristics: a natural rubber-like polymer compound with antioxidant and antibacterial activity, but attention should be paid to its synergistic effect with medicinal active ingredients (such as cyclopentadiene terpenes).

(2) Polysaccharides

Content: about 2-10% (dry weight) in bark, and the purity can be increased to 50-80% after extraction.

Function: immune regulation, anti-tumor auxiliary effect, the content is greatly affected by the extraction solvent (water or ethanol).

(3) Flavonoids

Representative ingredients: Quercetin, Kaempferol, Rutin.

Content: The total flavonoid content in the dry bark is about 0.1-1%, of which quercetin accounts for about 10-30% (needs to be converted to total flavonoids).

Research significance: Antioxidant activity is positively correlated with content, but bioavailability needs to be evaluated in combination.

(4) Iridoids

Representative ingredients: Geniposide, Aucubin.

Content: About 0.5-2% in the dry bark, with Geniposide being the dominant one (accounting for about 50-70% of the total iridoids).

Function: Promote osteoblast differentiation, regulate blood sugar, and the content is significantly affected by the extraction process.

(5) Lignans

Representative component: Pinoresinol diglucoside.

Content: about 0.1-0.5% in dry bark, with antioxidant and estrogen-like activity.

(6) Other components

Phenolic acids (such as chlorogenic acid): content of about 0.01-0.2%.

Amino acids and trace elements: Contains more than 17 amino acids (such as γ-aminobutyric acid), as well as zinc, iron, calcium, etc.

Extraction process:

Solvent selection: The content of polysaccharides and polar components (such as iridoid glycosides) in water extracts is relatively high; alcohol extracts (ethanol/methanol) are more likely to enrich flavonoids and fat-soluble components.

Temperature and time: High temperature may cause degradation of heat-sensitive components (such as geniposide).

Purification technology: Supercritical extraction, macroporous resin adsorption and other technologies can improve the purity of specific components.
